battery light

hey not realy sure this is the right catagory for this but....the battery light has been on constantly in my 01 5.4 for the last few days. i checked the voltage and got just over 14. i do have hypertech under drive pullys but ive had them over a year with no problems. if the truck has a momentary drop in voltage will the light stay on constantly like a CEL or will it go off wen voltage is back up? the belt is a new gatorback and the battery is 2 years tops

well i would assume that if it has been like tht for a few days that the alternator isnt bad if the truck hasnt died or anything it could just have a bad sensor on it or something but you can take it to advance and have them check it to see if the alternator is bad or not.

Actually, the natural voltage of the battery is 12.6V. It can stay at up to 14V for a minute or two after the engine is shut off or a charger is removed.

If volts are still Increasing, you have a short. It would be the LG/RD Wire. Trace that one, you'll find it most likely.

by volts increasing u mean past 14? and witch wire is it that i should check? i already replaced the main power wire from the alternator to the battery and that wire had two others in the loom with it and i just taped them up as there own separate harness and hooked them back up

Right, - If your between 13 & 15 volts, the system is fine. You either have a pin dislodged in the connector , a short or you didn't connect the Green on the other side. As long as you not dropping below 13 at any time while she's running, -it's charging. Yea, you battery is determined healthy right ? Your alternators putting out within spec right ? Sounds like it to me.

Iduno, what do you guys think?

If the light is on and it still appears to be charging adequately, there are 2 possibilities - a wiring issue like Brew is pointing to, or a bad diode in the alternator.

well the orange and green wire are definatley good between the connections is good. im goin to check the plugs and pins tomarrow, if they are all good is there a way to check the diode in the alternator? it looks like the green wire is the one that runs the light is there a way to check the pins it goes to at either end?

So did you replace the connector as well ? That's not clear. You you got a new harness and two wire were tapped to it. Or did a new connector come with ? Well, regardless, make sure it's like this - Orange - White - Green.

___________

Yea, the harness separated, - show opposite side of connection. Connection at the firewall. Not sure if yours is like mine. This is a 98 pic here, - the 2001 might connect a little differently, but it should be wired the same. My Orange connects to that 20 amp mini and the right to the 12 volt side. Your diagram shows it the same.

You most likely have that all tested out by now lol. I would check all the fuses, if you haven't already.

Good Luck.
