Intermittent front end grind Advice please!

I have a 06 f150 5.4 4x4 with electronic shift on the fly and an automatic...and its really frustrating me right now.
about 3 days ago my truck started makin a new noise...it sounds like ice in a blender...kinda shakes like a plane is taking off.
anyway the truck will make this noise in 2wd starting at about 25 mph. it sorta sounded like the middle of the passenger side but i had my buddy sit over there and he thinks more towards the front end.
this noise is loud...and i cant figure it out. i changed the transmission and transfer case fluids and they were all clean with no shavings..the differentials were needing changed but also no shavings. the noiise will go on for a minute or two any where from 20 45 mph definatly sounding like gears grinding then all of a sudden it will just stop and the truck will run silently and smoothly and as far as i can tell the front end isnt causing any extra drag.
so as a theory someone suggested i unplug the vacuum at the IWE and see what it did...same noise if not worse...seemed to be good vacuum pressure at the IWE solenoid but i realize that might mean nothing at all because we dont have vacuum tester and didnt check any other points for any kind of pressure. if the solenoid was bad would a check engine light come one? what could my issue be and why does it go away so easiy?
