Hub stuck in 4wd?

Recently I replaced both of my front hubs on my 04 super crew. I use 4wd drive a lot because of the loose sand and soil around my fields. When I got my old hubs replaced, the dealer said one of my hubs was stuck in 4wd and thats what made it wear so quick. Well, 2 months after the new hubs and here I am with a similar sound as to when the previous hubs went bad. So I guess I'm asking, what part in my front axle needs to be replaced so they will quit getting stuck in 4wd? I would rather spend $200 on new CV joints rather than another $900 on new hubs. Is there any way I can tell when its completely out of 4wd? I've tryed engaging and disengaging to maybe get it out but I dont know how to tell. Is there any way I can get it out of 4wd at home by removing the wheel, taking it apart myself sorta thing which would save me money?
