4.56 gears with stock tire size for winter... Need help

Hi guy,

So here's the deal I have 4.56 gears in my differentials which is fine when rolling with my 35's but being the first winter I'm going into with my lift I need to have winter tires... which I have on my stock wheels. They are stock sized so I have a pretty good idea of how much my RPM is going to REV with those and my 4.56.

1- I'm wondering if it's going to be drivable?

2- If not what do you suggest?

I have an Egdge Evo for you information.

Thanks for the input.

Why wouldn't it be drivable? Use the Edge to correct the speedo/odo and drive it.

Aren't your 35's rated M+S?

You can run the tires since you can reprogram the computer but you probably wont be able to go highway speeds. Might also have traction trouble from the additional torque. I guess just be very careful. Not sure what else you can do. We only get snow for about 5 hours a year down here in Texas.

umm... i don't understand why your 35s wouldn't help you in the snow.

Im sure he has wheels that he doesn't want to use in the winter, prolly bigger than the stock wheel or i'd just switch the tires over to my stockers for winter.

Why wouldn't he be able to go highway speeds? It would be like having 3.20's with OD locked out. Come on, folks - these engines will run at 4000 rpm all day and all night if you ask them to. 80 mph is only going to be about 2800 rpm. It's gonna suck gas at those speeds, but that's way over the speed limit up there anyway.

Traction issues in the snow? Start off with the tranny lever in "2" for a 2nd gear start, shift to "D" around 15 mph.

His 35's may not be rated as snow tires. I believe in QC you are required to run rated tires in the winter.

GLC -->
Up here we are allowed to run LT tires in the winter until 2014. But quite frankly
it's just unsafe here to run anything else than dedicated winter tires during the winter.

Everybody else-->
I don't want to run my 35's because they are on a XD set of wheels that I particularly like and they spread A LOT of salt to help keep the roads safe. That and the fact that even with the salt roads are still really icy so the need a good winter tires comes into play when stopping.

When I said not drivable, I was referring to the high RPM's the motor is going to be running. But I guess I will give it a try and see how I like it. Otherwise I will sell my stock wheels with the current winter tires and buy and used set of wheels and 35's and have them studded.

Thanks for the input guys.

High RPM's????? Less than 3000 RPM at 80 MPH (130 KPH) isn't high. The engine redline is over 6000 but the limiter is set to about 5400 to protect the torque converter.

With my 4.88's, with 35's, i run 3000 rpms @ 80. Hasn't hurt it yet and my motor is 14 years old.

Alright guys,

I wasn't stating that the motor can't take those higher RPM's just that it will affect drivability in terms of traction and just for passing people on highway. But it seems that I should be ok, hence the reason I asked here first.

Like I said, when you are in adverse traction situations, do a 2nd gear start. Your highway passing power will actually be better.

A 5 speed wouldn't suck - just shift earlier.

and if your exhaust is loud, you might even save a life or two, if the phrase "loud pipes save lives" is true
