ford 8.8 ifs question

Besides reverse direction, are 8.8 IFS, IRS and live axle the same internally? For example can a LSD differential made for an 8.8 IRS or live axle be used in the IFS housing? Thanks for any info!

Just so you know a reverse cut gear still turns in the same direction. It is just the way the gears are cut. Any diff that will fit in the 8.8 will work on the front. You just have to pay attention to the fact that the front diff uses 28 spline axles. ARB makes an air locker for this diff.

Thanks for the clarification. So even if I used the diff with the higher spline count if I really wanted to use it I could get custom front axles made and re-splined to work then? The main concern is the rear 8.8 diff fitting inside a IFS 8.8 without any issues. Thanks again!

well yeah you could make it into a 31spl front by having shafts made, then using a 31spl carrier.
8.8 and 8.8, it'll work relax, your concern will be purely spline counts.

Why not just find a 28 spline diff? The cost of having 31 spline axles made far out weighs the cost of a 28 spline diff. The passenger is going to give you the most grief. it is not your typical axle. It is actually a short shaft with the splines on one end and a gear on the other.

Would the ARB work in a daily driver? I use my 02 screw for my primary vehicle and I do some off roading. Or should I just keep the front diff open?

You must have no idea how the ARB locker works if you are asking that.

Last I checked (it's been a while), the 28 spline 8.8 ARB locker was discontinued. Eaton does make an E-locker though, I have one installed in the front of my 06.

The US site has one listed in their application chart. RD82 is the part number.
While the ARB is expensive it allows you to select when to lock it. It will work as an open diff till you lock it. To tell you the truth I forgot about the Eaton. It does the same thing as the ARB only it uses electricity to lock not compressed air. It could be argued that it is better because there are no air lines to leak and the ARB will need a compressor.

That's right, the E-locker is self sustained. I do carry a compressor and may setup on-board air in the future, but I still want the locker to function independently from the air setup.
