almost empty diff

I just took my truck to an oil change place yesterday and they had to put 4 pints of fluid in the rear diff. Since it only holds 5.5 pints, it was near empty. There are no leaks anywhere. I bought the truck used and usually do my own maintenance. Since I've never seen a leak, I've never bothered checking the fluid level, figuring it was filled from the factory. Evidently, that was not the case. The manager said he's seen brand new vehicles with only 3,000 miles that were not filled all the way. Just goes to show that the couple hundred dollar "Dealer Prep Charge" is free money for the dealership. I've learned my lesson. I'm checking everything a little closer from now on. Just glad I haven't towed anything yet!

Hmmm Dealer prep charge wasn't on my invoice or sticker.
Now when I bought my Honda they tried to lay it on me when I went the Finance man where you do all the paperwork.
It was like $800.00.
I immedately called for the manager and told him we had already agreed on the price and I refused to pay the little "add on"
He said everyone had to pay it so I started to leave.
It was amazing how fast the "dealer prep charge" got dropped.
