Gear installation?

I have a 2001 with the 4.6 so it has the 8.8 inch rearend it is 4X4 and i have a 3 BL with 315 70 17 kelly safari's and im considering regearing and i have read a lot on here about it. Im thinking the 4.10's will be better because i do probably 80% highway driving, my question is do i have to do the front and the rear axles or can i just do the rear and which programmer will work for this? thanks for any help or info!!

you must do both axles if you want to still use 4wd.

I have the same set up (4.6 w/ 8.8), but I used 4.56's. My gas mileage increased significantly to my suprise.

because if you use 4wd and have two different gear ratios, one set of wheels will be spinning faster than the other.

ok thanks guys for the info i found the 4.10 set of gears on accuautoparts.com i think is the name, they have motive sets for around 150, so a good guess for the total cost would be around 700 with a good used tuner, is this about right?

I think you are seriously underestimating the cost - parts and labor for both axles plus a programmer is going to set you back about 2 grand.

More than likely u will have to pay a good amount to have someone install them. It is not an easy job from what I hear. In addition to the cost of gears, pretty sure you have to buy an install kit which includes new bearings and such.

my Yukons were $200, master install kit $100, Gear Oil $50, Install $200(friend price). I was at $550 for just 1 axle, and you need both axles, and a tuner, you are looking at more like $1500

transmissions and differentials are two different things. Just hope he knows what he is doing. A few thousands of an inch can ruin a set of gears.
