I also found a plastic piece in the pan as well (see last photo.) No idea what it does.

I'm more concerned about you using something other than ATF in the transfer case.................

As for the "mystery part", read the stickies at the top of this section of the forum

A machine pushes oil backwards through the system and and roll seals. I recommend dropping the pan and changing filter every 15,000, or atleast once a year

No, not if it's used passively in the exchange mode - letting the tranny pump do the work.

Well, winter is coming... Hopefully well get tons of snow so I can test out the transfer case.

Does anyone know all the torque specs for the bolts in the transmission and rear diff, and the drain plugs?

Many transmission shops that I've visited dont use that style as the non passive type is quicker (from my understanding). Thus quicker = more can be done in a day = more money.
