so did he tell you how he was going to get the carrier out?

 

He said it was the tightest one he's ever worked worked on. All in all got it back in two days and it ended up being 350 including the new seals and bearings he put in just being the guy he is.

He had to use the case spreader ford tool.
I hate to bring my stuff to someone else to get it done, I never do it unless im up against time constraints or need something I can't get (this tool) but for 350 im happy, first time I've got to use 4x4 with the 4.88s and low range is great. 4mph at 3000rpm

 

so how are you guys doing the DIY install re-installing your carrier and pinion bearings? Arbor press? My rear end has a odd squeek to it at times and with 185k miles on the ticker, its time to regear it

thomas, i just heated up the bearings in a toaster oven and they slid right on.

 

Haha... I forgot about that trick. I knew there was a reason i kept that old toaster oven. haha Well that will save me $500 on a arbor press and tooling.

 

yup, just make sure you get the master shim off the old pinion and put it on the new one before you place the hot new pinion bearing on. ask me how i know!

 

LOL, I've been there before! I'm assuming the forward differential is like the rear different of the IRS in the 99+ Mustang Cobra's, in that its aluminum and requires a "spreader" to get the differential out. And if your lucky, you don't need the spreader.

i got lucky on mine, i didnt need the spreader, it popped out pretty easy
