2001 Supercrew clanging noise

Hi..need some advise on this clanging noise I am hearing from under the truck. It happens when i am reducing my speed, coming to a stop then starts up again until i accelerate to about 30 or 40klm..then its quiet till I slow down again. Sounds like its coming from midway underneath somewhere near the transfer case. I have no idea. You only hear it if the truck is in motion..in reverse as well. Today I engaged the 4 wheel drive and it smelt funny, a smell similar to air from a tire...when I stopped there was some fluid dripping from under the truck. I took it out of 4 wheel drive. when I got back home no more leak. Still smells funny when I drive
Please advise

Sounds like your TC is shot. Had a similar sound and problem with my old 01. TC had to be replaced.

Do you mean the Transfer Case or Torque Converter?

Sorry, transfer case. Something was broke inside allowing things to move around when they shouldn't, causing the clanging noise. It showed up when starting or stopping.

first thing I'd check is the universal joints and go from there.

While it is worth checking, u-joints usually have a clicking or squealing sound when they are going bad.

Hi guys thanks. The noise stopped for a few days and I thought all was well but it started again, lasted a day then stopped for another few days. It has started again now. Will have the mechanic check the transfer case.
