Question 4X4-Shifting to 4L

I just bought a 1998 F-150 Lariat EXT CAB. Unfortunately, I do not have the owners manual and this is the first 4X4 I have ever owned. There is a manual shift located in the floor to switch between 2H,4H,N,4L. I can switch between 2H and 4H (indicated on the control display panel), but I am unable to switch to N and 4L. Is this a mechanical problem or operator error?

huffy,
good choice of trucks. The gear shift has to be in N to go to 4x4 low.

Actually You need to be at a complete stop before manually shifting into 4L. The low gears are NOT synchronized like the 4H gears. You should however be able to pop it in and out of 4H while rolling down the road.
Do you have a manual gear shifter or Automatic?

If it is the **** on the dash you can put it into 4L while still moving but it won't shift until in neutal and at a stop. It shouldn't hurt anything if this happens. All it will do is just sit there in 4H.

To get it into 4WL you must be stoped with your foot on the brake and in neutal before you can shift between 4H and 4L.
Sorry to repeat what everyone else said but, I just wanted to make sure you understood.

As I recall with the manual transfer case shifter, you don't have to be completely stopped or have your foot on the brake. Completely stopping makes the gears mesh easier though.

Main thing is to put tranny into neutral, then push the shifter from 2H to the left, then down thru N(eutral), then right to 4L. Try not to stop in N. Go smoothly thru N.
