Post 3rd member oil level

When removing the fill plug on a '97~'99 2WD rear diff, where should the oil level be in relationship to the fill plug hole? A service mgr told me that it should be within 3/4 to 1 inch below the hole. I was always taught that the level should be flush with the bottom of the hole. He advised that even though the synthetic oil does not foam, any higher would cause leaks. Have any thoughts on this? j.b.

j.b.,

Anywhere between his measurement and the bottom of the hole should be fine. His measurement is plenty. When the gears in the differential start turning, oil flies everywhere. There isn't anything inside the housing that doesn't get WELL oiled. As for the synthetic not foaming, I think a more accurate statement would be that it doesn't foam as much as conventional gear lubes.

Thanks! Does anybody have what the official Ford service manual specifies? Mechanic said they use a "marked wire" to measure, but all I was shown was the level found on the service mgr's small finger. jb

Sheesh

Fill to overflow. Tell that so-called 'mechanic' to stick that bent finger out for you -- and then break if for him as a reminder.

That fill hole is at a particular height for a reason.

Check out pages 208 and 209 of http://www.net-link.net/~n8jg/F-150/2000%20F-150%20Owner's%20Manual.pdf for backup.

Or,

to verify that it's done that way in REAL trucks, see: http://truck.eaton.com/na/service_pr...ive_axle_lube/
