Post Recall notice - my nuts are bad

I made this post in the wheels and tires section hoping somebody will know something.

Anybody received a recall notice saying their lug nuts are bad? What is this, can't Ford make nuts right? I just bought the truck a couple months back and haven't heard anything about this.

There was a problem with the lug nuts on '97 F150's from a certain supplier. My '97 Lariat had the problem and it took about 4 months for Ford to get the replacements for mine. You should be able to call any Ford dealer with your VIN and see if yours were replaced (it sounds like you have a 'pre-owned' vehicle).

DH,

Yes, I just bought the truck a couple months ago. I can see where the nuts don't center and align with an angle like most. 4D made a post in the other section that explained it. Thanks.

It had to do with a defective coating on the nuts that allowed them to loosen up. Re-tighten them to 80lbs plus a quarter turn until you can get it checked. They are probably already replaced.

I called the Ford dealer and they said they have them in stock and it would take 45 minutes to an hour to do the job. I wish they would just hand me the nuts and let me install them myself. I could do the job in 10 minutes.

I went to a local towing service when I had my 97' and all nuts were tight. Odd.

Cool

LarryS - I posted this in the other area also

I got this notice not too long after buying my new '97. I took my truck to the dealer who installed the new lug nuts. You can easily tell if you have the new lug nuts because they are BLACK in color. The original lugs had sort of an anodize goldish color. If you bought your truck used, you can tell at a glance by simply removing the center cap.

I decided a picture is worth a thousand words so here you go!
