Unhappy leak between front and rear gas tanks

Help! I am buying a 1989 F150 long bed with dual tanks. My friend owns it now and says if he fills either tank over half full there is a fuel leak between them. Anyone know what the problem is? Also where is the fuel filter located? Sounds stupid i know but this is my first F-150! Thanks for the help!

Better get that problem fixed ASAP! Mine did the same thing...only it was a fast leak, not a slow one!

For my 94' F-150, there is a check valve in the fuel pump that allowed gas to seep by. The fuel pump had to be replaced. There is supposedly a recall for this problem. I never checked into it. I didn't have the time to mess around! The fuel pump cost about $150 - I did the work myself.

My leak was so bad that the center tank overfilled and became pressurized from the rear pump pumping gas into it! It forced gas through the vapor line and into the fuel canister in the engine compartment. Problems arose when the motor started sucking gas instead of vapors from the canister. The motor became flooded causing it to intermittently stall!

It's all better now!

Oh yeah,
The fuel filter is along the inside of the frame rail below the driver-side door. Mine required a special fuel line tool ($5) to pop the filter off. If your's is similar, don't try to remove it without the tool.

Quick question - If FORD has a recall for a mechanical problem like the check valve and you are not the original owner will they still fix it for free?

If the truck has the 302, you won't need a line tool. The 89's were WAY up front, because of the 3rd fuel pump, my 89 was VERY simple to replace, I wish I could say that of the 93.

MI farmboy,
Let me know if you purchased this vehicle and how much it cost to repair it (and what exactly it was). I am looking at purchasing a 1992 F150 SB with dual tanks also.
Use my e-mail addy listed here. Thanks!
