I agree with hoser1. It's fairly easy to change, as there is a drain plug and one to fill. Check out the parts stores for a hand pump, one that screws onto ATF bottle. Then drain and fill.

Transfer Case Oil Change

The drain and fill plugs look as if a ratchet extension would be the tool to use, is this correct?

Thanks.

Yes. 3/8 drive, if I remember correctly.

Yup, just toss the drive of your socket set in there, might help to have say a 3" extension. For both the drain and the fill, i removed the skid plate that covers the t-case, you should too if it's so equipped. I think that was a standard 5/8" drive to take the bolts out of that. I actually only took out three of the four bolts, then swung the skid plate out. It gave me a chance to get rid of some mud there too!

I used Mobil 1 Atf, just becuase of availability, it was a bugger for me to get the amsoil for my diffs.

Very brown anfter 30k miles

I just changed the fluid in my transfercase after 30k miles. It was very very brown. I didn't expect it to be so discolored. put 2 qts of amsoil in.

Have any of you who have changed your fluid had the same probs?

Did mine Friday night and it was definitely discolored, but not as bad as my front dif. Looks like there was some serious moisture in there.

I was told by the dealer the chocolate milk look is normal due to water getting into the XFER case.

There are 2 plugs that the extensions fit in... the bottom one is the drain, and the top one is the fill. Just fill it up until just before the fluid comes out the hole.

Good Luck!
