Rear Dif. Fill Level

I just drained and refilled the rear dif. in my '97 F150 and am wondering if it should be filled level with the bottom of the fill plug. The manual calls for 5.5 pints and I put in 3 quarts and felt the level was barely adequate. Should it not be filled until fluid comes out of the fill hole? It also appeared as though the factory fill was on the short side. Have others found this?

Bambino, I see in your sig. that you've got Amsoil in your difs. Did you use a full 3 quarts in the back?

Here's a round about answer i guess...
I bought 4 qts incase of spillage, and didn't open the fourth one, but i think in my pump, there was still a bit of fluid left, and i did drip a bit while doing the job. However, there was overfill, so i was content with getting as much in there as i needed.
I did take the diff plate off, and must have let it drain for an hour, and then gone in and cleaned up the rest of it by hand. I don't have a hoist handy, so this is all in my driveway.
