I have noticed that after I hit about 95mph I get a vibration in the rear end. I think it is due to haveing an unbalanced driveshaft. I just put in a superchip and now have the chance to go over 100mph but it vibrates to much and I wondered if anyone else has had this problem.

Umm. I'd say it had something to do with the NINE POINT FIVE inch lift and the 35" tires you have... You shouldn't be going that fast in a truck that big anyway.

So do you guys mean to say there isn't a govener on our trucks? My 97 gets to about 95 mph then tends to "cut out", jerk a bit, yet go no faster. Understand, this is on very rural country roads here with no chance of collision except with deer, possum, or raccoons...
I don't do this often, but was wondering why it does this. BTW, I had my rear window replaced finally, had to pay $100 towards it, damn FMC (out of warrantee) but so far so good, no leaks on the slider! You guys wouldn't believe what we found when removing the backlite encased in the seal...

You dont seem to understand that I had this problem before I lifted the truck so the tires and the lift have nothing to do with it. And to get rid of the governer you have to get a superchip it reprograms your computer to have no governer.

I bought my '97 new and about 6 months after I got it a friend of mine who also has a '97 ask me if my truck would go over 95MPH. He told me his truch would not go over 95 and it seemed to cut out by design. About a week later, my curiousity got the better of me and I hit the gas peddle and let it roll. My truck rolled past 95-100-105 without a wimper before I let up. I detected no vibrations. It was the one and only time I've driven the truck that fast. When I want to go that fast, I use my Thunderbird SC.
Are you sure that your wheels are in absolute balance? It is really criticle with larger wheels such as yours. Lastly, on my first visit to the dealership for the first oil change and tire rotation, it was note that two of my stock wheels were out of balance. My wheels were re-balanced before my little excursion over 100 MPH. I'm sure I would have had a vibration without the rebalance.

Hey B&F,
Try putting some weight in the back and see if there is a difference. My truck starts to "float" (for lack of a better word) at 90-95 without any weight in the back. I can drive that fast 'cause I'm in D.C. and if you go slower, they run you over here. That's on the 55mph Loop around D.C. In town they only drive 70.

BigandFast: I have heard of this problem on many of trucks and jeeps. I think is has to do with JMC said, and the angle of the axle. They say when you put on a lift that you should rotate your axle by a certain degree. By the way, what kind of tires did you get? Superswampers?

I think I have your info on the 'governor', yes there is one on your truck. It's called the computer. I know that the Police model of the Crown Victoria's have a different computer in them than what the 'normal' people buy. I believe it's good for 130mph where the normal is somewhere between 90 & 100 mph. I remember reading something on this line regarding the truck computer also a while back on a different website.
Same applied to Camaros, as I remember it's something in the computer and speedometer head, without the 140 mph speedometer and the right computer, you could no go over a comparable speed.
More importantly, most tires are not rated for that kind of speed for an extended length of time. That's one of the reason there are special high speed rated tires, they are built differently than what you usually pick up at Firestone or Goodyear.
Besides that, where can you safely run those kinds of speeds in the States lately? Even places like Montana are cracking down as I understand. Used to love the run between Helena & Billings.

ok, every ford truck, 97 and higher has a speed limiter. PERIOD. their are differences between some of them which will allow your speed limiter to kick in earlier or later, but that is set at the factory and you can't change it, only remove it with a chip.
If you order your truck with 16 inch rims, and smaller tires, and the tires on it from the factory are correct, your speed limiter will probably be set as high as 108, perhaps your rearend matters as well.... If on the other hand you get a 4X4, Limited slip, with the 17" ORP and All Terrain tires, and a 3.73 rear, your speed limiter will be set at 95, just like mine was. Mike Troyer from Superchips explains this much better and more accurately then I do, so ask him in the computer chip section, he will explain it.
