Question 3:08 to 3:55 or 3:73 gears

I have a 1999 F-150 4.6L with 3:08 gears. I would like to use the truck to pull a trailer and want the higher towing capacity that comes with the taller gears. I want to keep this simple but do it right. Can I just order the gears from ford? And what about the Spedo? Is this just a change in the setup or do I need a new chip? Is there anything else?

Cool

I have a '98 4.6L and changed the 3.08 to 3.73. I used Ford MotorSport gears and had a speedshop change them out for me. I've been very pleased with the towing abilities with my travel trailer since then. I was lucky that a gear change in the speedo fixed the error after the change - I think 99's are different though. Get ready to spend about $70 for rear end fluid - the only place I could find mine was at the Ford dealer at $20something per quart!! The gears were about $225 and $150 to have them installed plus $70 for fluid. Best mod I've made in my truck.

Thumbs up New Gears

The change to 3.73 is the best move. Mine cost $575 at the dealer. Remember to upgrade to a trans. cooler to protect the transmisson from overheating when you tow.
