Switching to 4hi or 4lo via electric switch?

I bought a 1998 F150 4x4 with out an owners manual and im wondering whats the best way or correct way to switch into 4x4 via electronic switch. Is it safe to be driving and switch into 4hi? if so what's the max speed to do this and what is max speed you can go in 4hi. For 4lo what is the correct way or best way to engage 4lo? thanks for your time.

As far as 4HI, I've locked mine in at 40+ mph. 4LO you must be stopped and the transmission should be in park or neutral. Just don't drive around on pavement in 4wd.

You can switch from 2H to 4H and back to 2H at any speed up to 55 mph. Above that is possible, but the synchronizer in the transfer case wasn't designed for it.

To shift from 4H to 4L, you need to put your tranny in Neutral and step on your brake pedal before it will shift. If you don't shift or step on your brake, the truck will stay in 4H.

To shift from 4L to 4H, you need to again put the tranny in N and step on the brake pedal.

Sucks not to have the owner's manual. If you got any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

You might also want to consider putting the truck in 4x4 at least once a month even if it isn't used, just to keep things lubed up....Very highly recommended. I have always put my 4x4 in driven about a mile, the main key to that is take it easy.....Try doing it in a straight line. Just some other added advise. Take care and welcome to the site.
