Exclamation 4.10 gears installed!!

I got my truck back from B&C today. The gear change from 3.08 to 4.10 was pretty noticeable. I have much more pickup now. And the prics ended up being less than I was quoted. I ended up paying $400 flat for everything. Thats night and day from the 650 4WPW quoted me.

The only thing that was more noticeable was the speedometer difference. Good lord! I was going 80 on my speedo and not passing a single person on the freeway. Does anyone know how off my speedo actually is?? Also, I know there is a plasic gear that I can get to fix this. Does anyone know where I can get one and which one I need?? Any help is appreciated.

Mav07,

You will need PART # 17271-C9OP-A, 21 teeth Purple if you have an automatic. You will read less than ½% fast at 60 mph.

Mav07,

I tried the purple 21 tooth gear when I went from 3.55 to 4.10 and it was still about 10% off the 23 tooth white gear got me within 1 mph. Some say this won't correct your speedo but it did with mine. Good luck. I lost 1 mpg in the city but haven't checked on the highway yet. before I did any mods I got 14 mpg around town now I get 15 mpg.

Question

Did I miss something here or are you saying you got the complete job (parts and labor) done for $400? The truck is 4X4, isn't it? If so, you got a super deal!! I think I need to look a little closer at a gear change. I'm wanting to tow a 6000lb. camper around in the mountains of West Virginia. I've got a 1999 F150, SC, 4X4, 5.4, auto, 3.55 gears. The 4.10 would be a perfect addition.

Thanks,
Bill

No, My truck is 4x2. If it was 4x4 it would have been 800-900. $400 was a great deal. 4WPW wanted to do it for 650 and so did a local shop.

JCM - 21 tooth or 23 tooth? I want it as close as possible. I saw your other post as to why it would be the 21, but why did that not work on WarEagle's truck? What's my best bet? 21 or 23?

Mav,

Going from a 3.08 gear to a 4.10, your actual speed will be 3.08/4.10 (75.1%) of your speedometer reading. Or, at 80 mph, you were actually going 60 mpg (80*0.751=60). No wonder no one was passing you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you calculate the number of teeth on the gear that is needed, IF you know the number on the gear that is currently installed? Shouldn't it have 1/0.751 of the number of teeth - or 33% more teeth?

Mav, go with the 21, like JMC suggests. He's taking the 4.10s and the ~33s into consideration. WarEagle needs the "bigger" gear because he's still running ~30" inch tires, little less probably(29.6 or so).
A 21 teeth gear will probably get you as close as you were from the factory, doesn't seems like speedos are every exactly right anyway.

Oh yeah, you're off by like 18-19% right now, so when your speedo show 80 you really going about 65.

Tiron - I didn't notice that he was running 30's. I got the gear today. 21 tooth purple. The thing is smaller than I thought it would be. Only $6. Anyways, anyone know how to install it? I heard it doesn't take very long, but I'm not a whiz in the garage. Any directions or instructions would help.

ok, thanx to a little guidance from ninetyeightfword I got the thing instaled today. I'm not sure because I have no way of really telling until a cop pulls me over, but I think I might still be running slower than what it says. Can someone explain the exact math to me again? Is there anyone that has a similar setup that has dyno'ed it or gotten any other actual readings?

Hey Mav-
It's been a while so correct me if I am wrong. Wasnt the place you got the gears done at a friend or something. I should get my truck back wed from the body shop and want to bring it in thurs to get the gears done. Like we have discussed already 4 wheels wants $650 and thats where I am leading, they use US Gears. I may call and tell them I am bringing Ford Motorsport gears and see what they will charge to put them in. But $400 for everything is an awesome price. I have the chip from Mike T. to do the correction already since I cant put in the plastic gear on mine. Let me know and Thanks!

HTown - The place I got it done at wasn't a friend of mine. I've done most of my truck stuff with them and I also have a B&C Offroad sticker on my truck. So for them its free advertising. Plus, I got to talking with the owner and he's a nice guy. I can't say he's a friend, but we are on a first name basis so it's not just business. I would use B&C for the gears as opposed to 4WPW. 4WPW asked for $650 as opposed to the 1st estimate of $550 from B&C. Also, the owner knows me so he cut me slack and went down to $450 and then after install, he told me that it was only $400. I am still baffled about the extra 50 taken off, but I wan't going to complain. The thing about B&C is that they will deal with you. 4WPW is a set price because they are a large chain. B&C is privately owned so for a little business and some free advertising, he's willing to deal. If you need more info or want to talk to someone in charge at B&C call 713-946-0600 and ask for Kevin. If you do decide to go with them, shoot me an e-mail and I'll see if I can get him to drop the price a little more.

4WPW is weird. I called 3 different stores in my general area got 3 different prices for gears; 550, 650, 700. I called the closest one on a different ocasion 600. A friend called a bit later that week 750. So they seem to be all messed up with there pricing. And each representative has something different to say about the gears; one said im gonna hear a loud gear wine, the other said i wouldnt, one said I would have to break it in for 300 miles, the other said i could go to a drag. So I think that when the time comes for me to go to get gears im gonna go to a gearing shop not 4WPW.

Its been a good 500 miles since I've had my gears installed and here are my results. Acceleration is much easier. I don't have to depress the gas nearly as hard to get it to go. ALso, I don't lose as much speed going up hills as I used to. Cruising on the freeway is also much easier. I can't get an accurate MPG change, because I am not positive my speedo is correct. I changed from the 19 to the 21 tooth gear, and it is deifnately more accurate, but by my calculations should still be 5-10% off.(If anyone can explain this to me I'd appreciate it.)ANyways, my assessment: Very good mod, definately worth the money.

Mav,

I found a couple of measured mile locations on two different roads close by. I found out my speedo was farther off from the factory than it was after the mods. I used the stop watch feature on my wrist watch, locked the speedo on 60 mph and when the sign went past the passenger side A-pillar I started the clock and stopped it when the end sign went past the same spot. That's about as accurate a method as there is.
