How do you I.D. your diff gearing?
I know it's been covered before guy's, but I can't find the thread. Does anyone know how to determine what the existing gears in our trucks are. I have two tags on mine. One gives the oil spec., the other is a string of numbers that include 08 88 7m12. The only thing I can make of it is it's an 8.8 inch rearend, possibly with 3:08 gears. I would like to go to 4:10 or at least 3:73, but I can't tell where I'm starting from. I hope someone can at least point me in the right direction.
Thanks, Rick

My diff tag shows ratio, size,LS?? What does the axle code inside the driver's door say?

You're more than welcome !! That's the one. The 1 means "open" axle; not limited-slip, the "8" means 3.08 ratio, the rear-end size is 8.8" Good Luck, those 3.73s/4.10s will make it seem like 2 different trucks. The door is a code, the tag is specific (open/ratio_size_build date)

Incredible. I'm impressed with all that you discerned from two little numbers. I really thought most of these trucks rolled off the assembly line with 3:55's, including mine. Well, it looks like a gear change is in store as soon as it warms up a little. Should I look at Ford OEM, or is there a recommended brand name? Thanks again Max,I would not have believed it if you had not literally spelled it out for me.

It's no big deal at all; only a common code. Ford Racing Performance Parts makes both ratios for $199 retail, Richmond makes both ratios for $189 www.richmondgear.com (More info= www.reiderracing.com www.ring-pinion.com/ www.4wheelparts.com )If you have any interest in a Limited-Slip rear end, this is also a good time to install one, as the rear has to be tore down to this level for a gear change. The 8.8" has several options that the larger 9.75" does not in LSs.
