i want a new rear end what should i do??

whats up guys and girls? havent posted for a while but i need some advise. heres my dilema. i have 35" tires with a 6"+3" lift. my rear end is an open 3.31. i know it is way under geared. i want to change it to 4.10 but i also want to change it to a limited slip or a locker. one idea i had was to go to a local yard and look for a totaled f150 or expy with a limited slip rear and maybe a 3.73 gear ratio(i think i would be ok with that) and just take off the whole rear end. i have no idea if one is out there but maybe. and maybe the price would be right. but again i dont know. and i would need to find one with low miles. then my other option would be buying new 4.10's and a locker of some sort. i have the 9.75 rear so some of the lockers are out. help me with some good ideas here will you? i cant afford to spend too much cash but need to change it quick. thanks for your help. mitch.

New gears would run you about $180, a locker about $350 plus about $400-$500 for install. So yes you would be better switching out the entire rear end with a junkyard one if you could find it.

The question is will you be satisfied with 3.73s and the 35s? Alot of people I have talked with that have 35s and 5.4L said that the 4.56 gears are worth every penny. They don't feel that anything less than that is worth the money.

i agree. i have 3.73's with 33" tires and if i was gonna do it again, i would choose the 4.10's. for your application, dont go with anything higher than 4.10's. i recommend 4.56's.

Cool Mitch-

4.56 !! go look at some calculators. The 9.75" gears cost closer to $275. A 9.75" posi???..OEM and Auburn. A used rear???---could be damaged or a whiner and not enough gear. Buy gears and a differential. Get ready to fork over a grand.

thanks for the quick responses

i went over to 4wheel parts in irvine, they moved into the old truck toys building , they said it would be about $1400 installed with 4.10's and an auburn limited slip diff. seems pretty expensive to me. maybe i could get the gears installed by a professional and do the diff myself. i read somewhere in here it took about 4 hours to do. oh the joy. also, why i was there i picked up a K&N fipk. took about 30 minutes to install. i'm taking it on a test drive as soon as i get off here. thanks guys. mitch

R6racer, you want to do the exact same thing I want to do with my truck; that is put in 4.10s and a locker. I went and priced a rear end with disk brakes at a wreckers and they wanted $1200 for a 3.55 Posi out of a 2000 F150... Now I was thinking of going to 4WP in Santa Clara but I am hearing mixed things about their work; although they do offer a warranty. There is another member on here by the handle "WalkNet" that is on his third return to 4WP for 4.10s in a 9.75 and the good ole whinning problem... They are being pretty amicable but even with the warranty they seem to try to periodically catch him for the price of reinstalling shims or bearings...

I had heard that their was a rear end design alteration in the mid year '99s that most aftermarket install kits do not take into account anyone have any information on that? Last I heard Powertrax was contemplating a unit for the 9.75, but had not released it, hopefully that is somewhere down the road; or I may just end up settling for a Auburn unit...

Edit: BTW I am also warring with saving up a large down payment on a 2002 Blue R6 myself... Too many choices!!!

hey nonseq, thanks for the info. r6 is an awesome bike so go for it. well heres an update. got a new quote from the guys who did my lift. they will do it for $1100 installed. not too bad i guess. since i got my tax refund already i think im gonna do it. and on a side note, the K&N makes a lot of noise but it sure feels like it helped with the power. mitch
