Post Where would you get your gears installed?

Are gears a do it yourself or are they really hard to do?

It's not hard but it takes a lot of patience to get it right. The Ford shop manual for my old truck was very specific on the setup requirements and I think anyone could do it. The biggest problem is that you really need a pit or a hoist so that you can access the diff easily.

When I changed the gears on my Expedition, I had a buddy who runs a 4x4 shop do it for me and I am happy with the results.

We also found that the front diff bearings were in bad shape on a truck with <10k miles, so I got them replaced as well.

Installing gears in differential are no big deal, if you know what you are doing. Otherwise, I would highly recomend that you seek a proffesional to do the job. I (as a professional gear-person), have seen countless headaches that "do it yourselfers" have inflicted upon themselves.
Special tools, such as: dial indicator, micrometer, and torque wrench are needed to set-up a diff. I personally have had very good luck with OEM Ford & US gear ring & pinion sets.
