How Much For Gear Install?
Hey all, im looking into getting some 3.73's for my truck this week and i wanted to know a ballpark figure for a gear install. All i have in the rear end now are 3.08's. Should i take it to a good mechanic in my area or bring it to the Ford dealership? Will they charge me around the same price or will Ford be more expensive?
Thanks in advance.

I made the same switch (except I have the 4.6L V8). Definitely worth the money for me. I bought and installed my gears at a speed shop for $450 (about $70 of that was for the fluid available only at the Ford dealer!). I spent another $100 on bearings for the axle but the guy who did the swap said that the shims were in too tight from the factory and caused excessive wear. The dealers seem too be very expensive on any type of work - I suspect that the dealer gets a large portion of that and the person actually doing the work is NOT getting rich!!
Good luck!

Could the wide price range be because some of the lower gears (4.11 & 4.56) require a change of the carrier also? Right there you're looking at ~$500 additional. Something to keep in mind before ya start bashing vendors for price gouging. Also, www.drivetrainwarehouse.com, the place with "Guaranteed Low Pricing, Free Lifetime Warranty" IS part of 4wheel parts wholesalers. Just some info for ya.

I am getting ready to install 4.10 gears and a Powertrax no-slip. The shop that is doing the job said nothing about needing a new carrier. I was quoted 650 and that included new carrier bearings, new axel bearings, new axel seals and the install of the Powertrax unit (I bought the unit myself). This was on the 8.8 LS rear. The real problem is that not many places have the specialty equipment to do the gear installs.

Here it is for one axle :
Ring and Pinion 4.10 - $359.95
Solid Spacer Kit (shims that is not needed with the right Ring and Pinion set) - $34.95
Install kit for a 9.75 - $189.95
Gear Oil - $12.50
Oil Disposal fee - $2.50
Lubes/Cleaners/Towels/Hardware (?) - $10.00
Labor - $425.00

Barnett Performance in Atlanta has gears for $180 an axle, in stock. There is a $90 kit for it that includes shims, bearings, seals, etc. That's all you need besides install, which I have been quoted from $150 to $325 locally.
I decided to go with an Auburn Pro LSD in the rear @ $350 from the same place. Prices varied greatly. The same LSD I paid $350 for was about the same at 4 wheel parts (not in stock, though), and $550 (!) from another local off road shop.

**** thats is high. The r&p should be about $150, install kit~$100 and the lalour is about $150 too high. WTF is the "Misc" charge of $25? and being charged for towels etc. is a bunch of ****.
I last message was jsut thrown out there thinking that some diffs required a carrier change around 3.5:1 ratio and was something for others to keep in mind.
