Gears ????
I have a 98 F-150 2WD reg cab with a 4.6L with an automatic. I have a open rear end with 3.55's. I want something with a little more get up, but I think a 4.10 is too much. Any suggestions. Also does anyone know if we have 28 or 31 splines in the rear. Thanks for any help.

I have 4.10's and am very happy with them (I previously had 3.55's). I have the 17" wheel/tire package, though. I really wanted 4.30's but my choices were 4.10 or 4.56.
You could get 3.73's but the difference between those and 3.55's is not worth the effort/cost IMHO.

I had it done at Modern Motors 4X4. Joe (the manager) is an old high school buddy. They have done differential work on both my trucks and do great work. They are on Blackfoot @ 58th.
It cost me a little over $2k (thats Canadian, before anyone flames me ).
Also on the 1999 and later trucks, you need speedo correction, which I did with a superchip from Mike T.
BTW, my carrier bearings on the front were shot with under 10k miles.
Send me an e-mail if you need more info: iann@f150driver.com

Sniper- 31 spline. There is plenty of top end for 4.10s. A change of .25 or so is not usually very noticeable or cost effective (meaning 3.73s).

2001 - I had this done in January and have been very happy with the result: as someone else said here, it is funny that the one modification that makes no difference to the actual power output seems to make the most difference in power on the road. The truck feels much lighter on its feet.
One thing before you start though: you should send your computer code to Mike T and see if Superchips can burn you a chip to correct for the gears. Otherwise, your speedo is going to read about 15% high. This really was frustrating and I had a lot of discussions with a lot of people at F150-0nline trying to figure out a solution.
If you have the regular transfer case, you might be able to use a recalibrator to correct the speedo (Joe sells those too) but for me that wouldn't work because the Expedition has a BW TOD transfer case that automatically engages 4wd whenever there is a difference detected between the front and rear driveshaft speeds (I'm not sure if the SCrew has this too).
I would probably have lived with the 3.55's except that I tow a 6500# (GVW) trailer and I was in second on any hill. I can't wait to try out my truck towing with these gears this summer!
Since you posted on the Towing board, I'm guessing you have the same issue. All my camping buddies think it's crazy to spend that kind of money on gears but if Ford won't make them from the factory, what choice do you have? Besides, I'd never live it down if I bought a GM product.
BTW at 100 km/h you are still only turning about 2100 rpm, so it's not like you are getting beaten up on the highway.
Let me know how it turns out.

Thanks for all the ngreat information Ian!
Seems like the 4.10 gears would make pulling trailers(4300lbs)through the Rogers Pass a breeze. The truck right now does a good job, but always looking for a way to take a little pressure off the drive/truck if I can and maybe the truck will not work as hard if I go to this gearing.
I will let you know how it goes...thanks agian Ian!
