Question Transfer case fluid

I have my trans and transfer case out due to my transfercase going bad on me and I figured I would put a clutch and slave cylinder in since I was over half way into it already. My question is can I use synthetic fluid on either or both and what would any of you recomend.

Thanks

You can use synthetic for both. I would recommend Amsoil if any........

Thumbs up

http://www.amsoil.com/products/tgo.htm

Got if you need some.

http://www.amsoil.com/products/tgr.html

Got in Series 2000 SAE 75w140 or 75w90.

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube delivers unbeatable protection and fuel economy. It has the film strength required to deliver all the protection heavy-duty and high-stress applications need in a fuel-saving viscosity grade. Recommended for use in all passenger vehicles, commercial trucks and race vehicles.

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Gear Lube offers an exceptionally low coefficient of friction for superior power transfer, heat control and fuel economy.

In fact, independent testing shows class 8 vehicles with AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube in the differentials obtained up to 4.83 percent more mpg than vehicles equipped with another popular gear lube.

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Gear Lube lasts longer than conventional petroleum gear lubes do. In non-commercial passenger vehicles operated under normal conditions, AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Gear Lube does not have to be drained. In cases of severe water or dirt contamination, a chemical lube analysis can determine if the gear lube is still serviceable.

Good Luck and let my know if I can help.

What's with using ATF in the TC? Doesn't it require gear oil?

I believe the trans takes the mercon 5, but the transfer case takes regular trans fluid. Mercon 5 is not needed there. I believe that is what the manual says.

What kind of socket fits the drain/fill plugs? Can you use a bare socket entension? Is it 3/8"?

gtrjim,

The hole in the plug is a 3/8 inch square.
In a pinch you can use a 3/8 inch ratchet but you may have to hold it in place. There is no allowance in the plug for the little ball in the ratchet head. A 6 inch extention will make it easier to reach the plug. Check out http://www.arizonatools.com/catalog/...es/Accessories
they show the special tool.
