Question Which Rear End Do I Have? What Kind Of Oil For It?

I have:

1993 F-150
FlareSide, 2WD
302, Automatic (AOD I believe, because it's a 3-Speed)

Ok I am going to change my rear differential fluid because it still has the original from 1993 in there. I have no idea which rear end I have. I have the Haynes manual and it has:

FORD 8.8------5.5 PINTS
FORD 9.0------5.5 PINTS
FORD 10.25----7.5 PINTS

Anyone know which one of these my truck should have?

My next question is on what type of oil I need to use.

Will 75W-90 work Okay? Or do I need to use somthing else?

I was going to use Royal Purple Max-Gear Oil 75w-90 Synthetic oil. Let me know what you guys think on this!

Thanks for all the help!

Well i just called my local dealer and asked them. They said that 75W-90 would be just fine. So I ordered some Royal Purple 75W-90 from Jeg's. Now I ahve to figure out if my rear end is limited slip or not.

It is not positive traction I know that. So are all non-positive traction rear ends limited slip? Got any idea of if mine is or not?

Thanks

As far as I know, ford only had limited-slip in the 93s, Mine has factory Ls, you can tell because the post on the door piller, has a number and a letter. mine is H9. If your truck has limited-slip than it probably requires, some attention for maintence.

"The preventative maintenance on the front and rear axles are simple, but need to be performed regularly if your truck is being used for harsh off roading or in deep water conditions. The first thing is to check that the ventilation tubes are in good condition,(no cracks, leaks,or blockage),and the end is located high enough that water can not enter while crossing creaks etc. If the tube leaks of course water will enter the diff, but if it is blocked or capped that is even worse. The air in the axles will expand from heat durring use, this air will have to escape through the axle seals, when it cools durring water crossings or even just sitting it will draw air back in along with any water present at the seals,(even residual water from driving in the rain will quickly build up enough to contaminate the gear oil, deteriorate the axle seals, and destroy the axle and R&P bearrings and races). So check those vent tubes often and replace if even questionable. The diffs should be opened and inspected if you suspect water may have contaminated the gear oil.The rear is simple just remove the bolts from the cover, clean out the old gear oil,use a solvent and air compressor to remove water from the bearings, gears, seals and races.Use a new gasket and silicone when replacing the cover,(remember to reinstall the axle idetification tag).If you suspect the outer axle shaft bearring or seals are bad replace them while the cover is off. Also replace the outer pinion shaft seal or bearings if bad.The front you will have to remove the front drive shaft and axles just to access the inner housing(another drawback of the Dana 44 and 50 IFS axles). You can draw the gear oil from the front using a pump and replace with new gear oil,but that is really a half *** way to do it,especialy if it has never been serviced. Simple Huh!! So remember to keep the vent tubes clean, high and dry and re-pack the outer axle and pinion seals with grease often."

A friend sent me this message, in regards to a post I put on another page, about Ls maintence. As you can obviously tell, I don't know that much about limited slips, so I had a experieced dealer do my 93 and later my 89. hope this helps some.

Hehe, thanks for the info. I will check the tube but one thing is for sure. I sure ain't taking that thing apart hehe. I am going to drain the old oil and put the new stuff in.

Now I have to find out if you are still supposed to use the Limited SLip additive even when using Synthetic fluids. Seems like I once read that you didn't need to but I ahev to find out

BMW325,

I'm not sure about your application but the 97+ F's have Synthetic fluid from the factory and they require the friction modifier. It goes further to state that when replacing the clutches in the LSD to soak them in friction modifier.
