My 1997 F150 with ESOF (4.6l & auto) is stuck in 4L. I was moving some stuff around in the muddy area at my place and needed it, and now it won't come out. No clicking sounds like its even trying to change.
Is there any trick to fixing this or is this a $500 trip to the dealer????

Try to see if the shift linkage is functioning correctly. Check a Hanes services manual. I have the floor shifter so it's relatively easy to check. If you have the dash mounted button then I'm not sure.

 

I have had a problem with my 98 since new with this. It is basically from lack of use. With your foot on the brake, shift from park to drive to reverse to park and it will release. I also had to replace the ESOF motor at about 45K.
