The price of 410 gears

I have a 99F150 with 355 rear end, I just put 33 inch tires on my truck and can tell some power loss mainly on steep hills I was just needing to know how expensive this would be and the best place to purchase them. A buddy of mine said summitt but I'm not for sure.I don't know alot about gears someone asked me if I had a 8.8", 9", or 9.75, what exactly does this refer to. FORD brothers I would really appreciate all your help on this I would really like too make a change.

You can find out which rear end you have by reading the stamped metal tag hanging on the back of your rear differential cover. YThere will be a series of numbers which are the ring and pinion gear ratio and then the size (examples is 8.8 or 9.75). You'll need to know this when you order your ring and pinion set.

You can go to this link http://www.ring-pinion.com/a-ford.shtml at Randy's Ring and Pinion to see the gear sets and which axle they coorespond to. I bought a 3.73, 9.75 gear set for my 2000 F150 and a positraction rear end to go with it.

Good luck!

The 8.8, 9, 9.75 as mentioned is the size of your rear axle. Most 5.4l engines have a 9.75, but not always, most 4.6 have the 8.8...9" were on the older models. As said, you can look on the little axle tag on your rear differential to tell which axle you have. If you have an 8.8, your options for gears are 3.08, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56. If you have the 9.75 you can also get 4.30. For 33's you will want to go to 4.10 most likely, so the next question is if you have a 4x4 or not. A 4x4 requires you to switch both the front and rear axle simutaneously. If you dont, you'll rip your drivetrain apart if you put it in 4wd. Since 4wd require 2 gear swaps, the price will be slightly more than double since the front differential is harder to get to and the gears are reverse-cut. If you have 4wd, plan on paying anywhere between $1150-$1650 for a swap, depending on shop, labor prices in your area, whether you'll need new bearings (probably a good idea to do this), etc...
If you have a 2wd, you can find prices about half that...around $650-700 is an average, but some ppl find lower prices and some pay higher.

Hope this helps.

I had my 3.08 gears replaced with 3.55's (8.8 rear end). The total cost including the gears was $375 (2WD) at a rear end shop here in San Jose, CA.
