no offense but your friends need to learn to speak a little better english

and get a real tow strap that wasn't meant for a 4 wheeler, ideally without any metal ends as well.

LOL yeah I wasn't anticipating getting stuck at all. I was doing good all day until I got a little ****y and thought I could handle a puddle that I couldn't see the bottom of. That's the reason why I only had a strap, because I was afraid of getting stuck and didn't think I would. Now I carry around three heavy duty chains, all no shorter than 20ft. As for my friends, there's always those kinds who seem to exhibit that "alley" language. But they are good people.

chains = BIG NO NO.

youtube chain breaking videos. Will easily kill some one, and with how many people you had wondering around you stuck truck chances are just going to increase. The chain will go right thru your windshield when it snaps.

Buy a good RECOVERY strap and call it a day.

Depends what type of chains though. My grandpa uses bulldozer chains to pull things out all the time with his F250. I questioned him using them once after seeing those type of videos and he said if it was intended for pulling thousands of pounds more than what he is using, and he uses them pretty much daily without a problem, then its fine. The important thing about chains is to make sure it is taught before you actually start pulling and not yank them.

If using the right size chain you are probably right, chances of breaking it is slim. But, when it does break something else is going to be destroyed whether it's a window, body panel, or a person. It's not worth the risk.

is your grandpa pulling vehicles or is he pulling logs and things around the farm? there is a huge difference from 500 lbs and a 6k lb truck + the suction in mud or what ever the vehicle is trying to get over. Easily i bet you will be at 10k force the truck is pulling against.

a strap is no more expensive than a chain and MUCH safer. I refuse to pull any body that hands me a chain. They will stay stuck until they hand me a strap, or i will hand them my hi-lift to get themselves out if my straps not on me. I do anything i can to keep myself and any other person safe with me offroad and not using a chain is one of my one major rules i refuse to break.

Oh no no, I've seen what chains can do when broken. I also understand the importance of using the right chain for the job. The chain I use is rated for 12,000 working load, it's 1/2" x 20' steel chain with locking hooks. One of my friends "inherited" some from a job site after I got stuck. It's just being as stuck as I was, I had to be yanked out by a larger truck, otherwise my truck was going no where. Shortly I'll be getting a new winch bumper and possibly a VR12000 Warn winch (unless there's a better one for less than $800 out there) but for the moment, if I get severely stuck, the chains will have to do.
