97 F150 4.6 Engine Fan removal

97 F150 4.6 Engine Fan removal

Which way does the fan have to be turned to remove it?

My Haynes or Chiltons says its a left hand thread, but looking at, that does not make sense. I tried it as a left hand thread, turning clockwise, standing in front looking back, and only spread and ruined two fan removal wrenches.

Need help!

I did a search and I get the idea that the 4.6, with the truck serp belt should be a right hand thread?

standing infront of the truck, looking at the fan, you will turn it counter clockwise, oh and another thing for your balancer, you can try and hold the flywheel with something through the torque converter access hole

My Haynes manual said to turn it the wrong way(right) also.

Thanks Built54, that did the trick!

I don't come here very often, but people on here have saved my day with this truck several times!!

I took the radiator cover, air duct assembly, etc, off the truck Sat morning, Sunday morning, etc, and could not get the fan off, per the directions in my Chiltons!!!

I put the sob back together, since it was working, and I need it to drive to work, etc... could not get enough access to the dampener to get the bolt out, by hand, and could not get near it with the impact.

Still had an annoying fanbelt squeal, that's been steadily getting worse for 2 months now!

Actualy got the fan loose yesterday afternoon after reading the responses.

So I went at it this morning, the fan came off, the shroud came out, and the impact got the damper bolt out. Got the new one on, and so far the squeal is gone!!!!!

Also, thanks to whoever on this board replied to my thread of a couple months ago about the squeal, and mentioned the damper as failing!

Yep, mine was getting old, the rubber had started to fail, and allowed the pulley to run about 1/8 out of alignment.

squeal

What is this dampner you are talking about, where was the squeal coming from?

The crankshaft damper, which on the 4.6 has the crank pulley on the outer ring, rubber mounted. The pulley portion got ****ed about 1/8 in out of alignment on one side, apparently causing a belt squeal.

I am used to 302/351 engines, where this is the balancer as well as the damper, and the pulley is bolted on and does not have this problem, although the dampers still fail.

I think the 4.6 is internally balanced, so the damper is just a damper, not a balancer.

​​​​​​it does turn left to loosen stand in front of the truck and turn it left I just did mine on my 4.6

I cannot remember, nor go.look.at this hour. And I did not get a cheap Ford shewtmetal.wrwnch like my Aerostat used. I think I had a regular open end. Nut I seem to recall that it was not on hard, but required a bump with your palm, or I jambed two of its bolts with a screwdriver, or jambed the serpentine belt. In any event, it was not hard. Disclaimer, mine is a 2001 5.4. A discussion in another F150. Forum is in replacing these with electric. Seems.to make sense.

EDIT, In any event as well, it seems you are turning it the wrong way,.if it is difficult.

I write in my Haynes/Chiltons. And cross out neatly, pages and half pages diagonally only, pages that do not apply. I note additions and corrections. (Spark plug torque and the Tech#.) This goes to the eventual truck heir/buyer as a FEATURE. As it emphasizes careful maintenance, it also reduces "negotiation.'
