...any use at all to try and place a better 8" sub in it? I will either run the Kenwood KAC-X650 5 channel amp or a dedicated amp to the sub.

I think it is worth a try. Just make sure to measure the back spacing and get something that will handle some power but still fit. I suggest a dedicated class d amp for any sub application.

I agree with Steve... a good Class D amp is the way to go!
