Question Anyone tried making boxes for a 99 supercab?

I have looked at the boxes made by Meskin but he was lucky that the 2000 supercabs changed the back seat design. In my 99 it has the metal peice that holds the seat, letting you fold it toward the front of the truck when using the space for storage. This unfortunately leaves alot less space for a box and with the bolt poking down you also loose more space. I was wandering if someone has attempted to make boxes for the 99 and older supercabs and if so how they turned out.. Also, where was the amp/amps located if the box goes all the way across the back seat? I have very crude boxes now with two MTX 4000 Thunder series that stick out from the seats about 3 inches, but I like the way that Meskin's boxes look and would like to accomplish the same kind of finished product.

Tigger,

Just thought I'd put in my $.02 worth. I have a '97 supercab and just finished installing my system. I want you to realize that I am in no means an expert on this, but I can tell you of my personal experiences. I only have a single 10, and it only fits under the passenger side rear seat. I built the enclosure out of 3/4" MDF and was able to get somewhere around .70 cubic ft out of it. The sub is a Boston Rally Series sub that is very efficient and has a low Q. I looked at both MTX and JL Audio subs. MTX subs are way to inefficient in my opinion (although they sound awsome when you have enough power), and JL only makes the 10W1 in a shallow enough depth to fit in my enclosure. The 10W1, in my opinion, is too expensive for what it is, and the efficiency is only 86.5 db. Here's the problems I ran into.
1) There is a bracket bolted to the floor three quarters of the way over from the passenger side. There is no way to build the box around it. If you want two subs, your best bet might be to take this bracket out and let the seat rest on the enclosure in the middle, which brings me to my second point.
2) There is a metal brace running the length of the rear seat. The center bracket is even notched for it. I had to lift my seat to even be able to fit an enclosure under it. The sub I'm using only has a mounting depth of 4 3/4", but the bracket would have rested on top of the sub. I lifted my seat 1 1/2". I'ts actually more comfortable for most people.
3) The amp. I had two choices. I mounted it in a trick flush mount under the passenger side of the rear seat. My other choice was in the center console as I have the captains chairs up front. I don't know if you can fit anything under the front bench seat.

That is enough of my rambling. If you have any questions I would be more than happy to try to answer them. Oh yea, you guys with the 2K and up trucks...consider yourselves lucky.

Hey Lok N Load.. Thanks for you reply. I am thinking that I will try removing the middle bracket.. at least one of them and having the middle of the seat rest on the box with the subs firing down. How did you raise the seat? That would help alot since I have to get at least .5 cu ft for air space for the MTX subs. I thought about using washers under the brackets to try and raise it up but did not know how it would turn out. I figured it would be ok since the bolts will go through the washers. Curious to know what you did..

Cool

Tigger,

I actually used 1 1/2" by 1 1/2" blocks mounted on top of the brackets just under the seat. I also carpeted them to match the interior of the truck. You don't even notice that they are there. I thought about removing the center bracket and putting in 2 tens, but with the output I'm getting now, I don't know that I need anymore. Let me know how it goes.

It doesnt look like it would be too hard to raise the bench seat but what did you do about the part of the seat you lean against? It looks like it is seperate. Did you just leave it where it was and raise the lower part? It looks like raising it would give you more leg room but if your tall like alot of my friends your head might hit the roof. If I didnt raise it I think I could get 2 or 3 eights under there. How would you think this would compare with one ten if they are provided enough power? Thanks!

Question

Lok

I looked at my seat and it looks easy enough to raise but did you have to cheat the seat forward to make room for the part you lean against? It looks like the back part comes forward and you would have to move the bottom forward some to make room. Ive taken measurements and I think if I raise it 1.5 inch I may be able to fit a 12" under there. You dont have a pic of your mods do you? Thanks!

Thumbs up

Larry,

I only raised the seat 1 1/2 inches. I left the back part where it was. It actually made the rear seat more comfortable for taller people with longer legs. I haven't had any complaints yet from anybody riding in my rear seat.

As far as the 8's vs. 10's, go with the 10's. I had two 8's and now I have a single 10 that not only goes lower, but hits harder in my opinion. Just my thoughts.

mjvaughan:
No, the seat will not fold over and lay flat. Two reasons...1) the sub enclosure is in the way (no matter what you do you can't avoid it). 2) I made panels that go all the way across the front of the seat so it looks like the seat sits on a solid carpeted pedastal. My amp sits in a flush mounted configuration under the driver's side of the rear seat.

Larry:
The seat cushion went back in the original position. There are two bolts that anchor it by the back cab wall though, as well as the 8 screws that go into the floor brackets. I had to make blocks for these as well and buy longer bolts. You might be able to fit a 12, but it would have to be a fairly shallow one. I think you might be able to get 5 1/2 inches of total depth. More important is the amount of airspace you will give your sub. I was able to pull .70 cubic feet out of my enclosure which was perfect for my Boston. I also prefer 10's. They are more accurate and fit my musical tastes better. If you can get the depth and airspace for a 12 then I say go for it. As for pictures, I don't have a digital camera so I'll have to take some snapshots and scan them in. I'll try to do that in the next couple of days.

Cool

LokNLoad,
Can you get the dimensions of your box? I would appreciate that, as well as a copy (posting) of those pictures when you get them up.

Thanks

Question

Hey Lok

I would be really interested in seeing those pictures if you ever get them scanned. In the mean time, what did you use for blocks? Wood blocks or did you find metal? I was thinking of using some square aluminum tubing but I think it only comes in 1" and 2" both of which I have. Do you think 2" would be too radical? Also, what kind of bolts did you use because the stock ones look kinda weird in my '98. A couple of them look like a torx head on the top of the bolt and looks like it uses that pattern to screw it into the floor and then a bolt is screwed onto it to hold the seat. Do you happen to remember the length and thread pattern you used and if you had these odd bolts also? I dont know if anyone would know, but can you put a 10" and an 8" in the same enclosure if they are the same brand running at the same ohms? Would it even be worth trying or should I just stick with the one ten? Thanks for any input!

Larry,

I'm working on the pics. I just did some more mods to my truck and I'm waiting for a nice day so I can wash it and take all the pictures at once. I don't think 2" would be too high and the aluminum would probably work pretty well. I used wood because I could carpet it to match the interior and it was easy. I had the same torx head screws. I replaced those with 2" long bolts, nuts, and lock washers that would fit through the holes. As for the two bolts that hold the seat to the rear of the cab, I made spacers for those too and used two of the longer factory cab mount bolts after I did my body lift. I would suggest not mounting a 10 and an 8 in the same box. Theoretically it should work, but usually what happens is the larger sound wave from the 10 inside the box will cancel the sound wave from the 8. You'll end up with less sound than just one 10. You could separate the air space, but even then I would run the 8 on a bandpass frequency, say around 80-120 hz and run the 10 80 hz and lower.

JC Whitney sells rear bench seat risers for 70-99 F150 supercabs in their everything automotive section. The metal bracket raises the rear seat about 4" to give rear seat occupants more leg room and provide more storage space. With the riser you could build a box with larger inside volume.
