Subwoofer/speakers w/stock head unit
So far Every Ford vehicle I've had I've been very happy with the sound systems in them. However I was just in cartoys today and bought a really nice car alarm to be installed next Saturday. While I was in there I happened to hear someone turn up a set of subwoofers. They really turned them up too loud(they were literally moving the windows in the store), but once they got turned down to a reasonable level I really appreciated the ability to feel the music through your bones.
Since I know absolutely nothing about sound systems, I just know what I like I'm wondering a little question. Is it possible to put a subwoofer under the rear seat of my 2001 F-150 Supercab, and what should I be looking for in the subwoofer? Is 1 or 2 speakers better? also do I need an amp, and what does it do? I think I'm going to stick with the stock head unit as I like how it works, and none of the aftermarket ones fit perfectly into the spot.
Also with the subwoofer, is it possible to replace the speakers in the doors with other speakers that have greater ranges on them, and what should I be looking for on them? I ask on the speakers because the other day I was listening to the radio, and had it turned to about the halfway mark and was getting some bad distortion on the highs. Any assistance anyone can give me would be appreciated as the teenagers at these car audio shops I'd be at odds to trust. If you have an ad for something please e-mail me at ktigre@ticnet.com as I know you can't post ads on the message board. For enclosures I do want to avoid putting anything under the little seat behind the driver as I tilt that up constantly and put stuff there like groceries and need that space.
Thanks all!!!
Chris

You can get lots of good information and some answers to your questions at some of the car audio sites, like www.crutchfield.com
You will need an amp to power a subwoofer. Aftermarket head units offer some real advantages when using amps and subs. Good head units will have multiple 'pre-out' jacks, which allow you to hook up the amp with RCA jacks instead of speaker wire. For powering subs, a 'non fading' pre-out allows you to independently control the volume of the sub.
Your front speakers play a much bigger role than your rears, so if you are going to upgrade your stock speakers, do the fronts first. Component speakers offer a big improvement over stock, but also usually need more power than your headunit provides.

1999 XLT S/C, 4.2 V-6, auto, 3.55 rear, dark torreador red/harvest gold, Ford bed liner
Clarion ARX8570z Head Unit, Sony 10 disc CD, Infinity 610cs components & JBL GTO7520 speakers; USAcousitcs 4065 amp and Polk 8" subwoofer
Edelbrock IAS, Energy Suspension anti-sway bar bushings, Steeda Rear Anti-sway bar, 2" rear drop.
