crockett59,

Man, that last picture - apples and oranges, a 10.5” deep 12” dia. dvc vs. 5” deep 12” dia. dvc or svc (I cant tell), meaning the picture looks like a 10” next to a 12” inch diameter sub, and 3.5 inches deep vs. 10.5 inches deep, it is one deceptive shot… No flame intended just looks strange…

TTT

The Memphis that is in your truck now will not fit an L (you know that), I do have an Eclipse setup and if we went speaker to speaker that’s 10” Eclipse 88100 series dvc @ 5.25 inches deep to the 10” Memphis 15-PR104D dvc @ 5 inches deep (that you recommended), and an equal amp (not mine its to powerful for that Memphis), I would be hard pressed to believe the Eclipse couldn’t hold your lunch box or something… The Eclipse has an aluminum cone and a power range of 500w/1000w vs. Memphis with a paper cone and a power range of 200w/400w… Now just for the sake of fun lets kick it up a notch (pow)… Go with the HPD-104D dvc also 5” deep, paper cone and a power range of 300/600, at 4X4 ohms like the Eclipse, it still wouldn’t get you there… One more time, the 15-SHP10 (one good looking sub), now we are at 6.5” deep, and to deep for an L, paper cone and a power range of 500/800, this was great at 2X2 ohms, but not to cost effective @ $519 a sub! Unfortunately not the right fit, trust me my seats are forward now and that would add (if you didn’t include needing more box volume) almost two more inches forward to work, would the sq be better? I would imagine that some of the guys in Lightning’s running 12’s (and there are a few), either down fire or have 5 to 6” deep speakers… Or they have lost some serious legroom with anything deeper, but I could be wrong…

I can honestly say that I have had every sub that is mentioned, Pioneer, which I really liked. Infinity, which I hated. JL which was made okay but It was not loud enough.
You mentioned you’ve had all the above listed speakers, I didn’t see the Eclipse mentioned in your posts (until the lunch box post) or did I miss something? And how about MB Quart? cobra97snake is putting these speakers in a Lightning, and unless he goes into his bed your speaker will not fit without his seat four to six inches forward and placed in a custom enclosure, even if he down fires them… I know you said to go with the power reference sub, that’s a different story, but can you say you have had them in the Thunder Form or a sub enclosure built correctly, and if so what amp was driving them to make them sound better than JL, Eclipse or MB Quart?

I didn’t want to reply to this last night, but the more I thought about someone who has heard (or had) the above listed subs, the more I thought what speaker size, what amp size, and what enclosure? I’m not trying to start something here either… We all have different opinions about amp-sub combos…

My post was to let cobra97snake know that I’ve had issues with the 10.1 Infinity Kappa Perfect Sub, rated a 350w(rms) to 1400w max in my L (which is one grade above what he was thinking about). BTW they did sound great for a single voice coil while they lasted…

crockett59, you and I do have one thing in common, our HU (and the pilots license that came with it), its sweet. I would love to hear your setup! I haven’t heard a Memphis setup like yours and those speakers at 10.5 inch’s deep have to be awesome! I know you laid some serious smack out for those competition speakers and I would love them too… But lets go apples to apples here, in an application that works for the guy… BTW I do have friends with big 12” JL & MB setups that flat crank (comp setups), and they are great subs IMHO… I also follow the sound forums and most of the Guru’s love MB and JL, that’s the reason for this long **** post… Fill me in bud, I really want to understand were you are coming from here…

Quick Brick,

Okay, here goes. The picture is most defenitly decieving but the two subs are 12". Just a pic of the LVS vs. an everyday sub.
I have not heard an MB quart sub? Now the eclipse didn't do anything for me. I heard them in a car looked about a 2.0 cu box sealed 2 subs. The amp was a 500 watt Rockford. I didn't ask him what the sub models were.(guy was a jerk). I never gave them another look. Now if you are going with power ratings, the best thing to do is to THROW them in the trash. They are inaccurate. I have the LVS and they rate it for like 800 watts. HA, I run that sub at 1 OHM on my amp EVERYDAY 1100 watts and it sounds GREAT. This summer we are going to take that sub and put two amps to it. 2-1500 watt class D memphis' one to each side. I can't Wait..... It currently resides in a 2.25 cu ported box. I would like to make a box that is 2.5 cu.

I have seen the behind the rear seat of an L I would look into the MTX thunder form w/ a memphis 10" studio or power reference, I would use a Studio 250 class D amp.(very small)

Hope I covered everything its pretty early this snowy mornig.

crockett59,

Thanks for getting back to me, and sorry to hear the guy with the Eclipse setup was such a jerk. MB does make a reference and a pro series sub for that enclosure, but I think it’s a mute point… I’ve got to admire you for the dedication you have towards Memphis, and the ***** to hook up two 1500 watt amps to that sub… hehe Hell I’d let you use my amp at 3000wrms @ 1ohm (if it wouldn’t trip, its more stable at 2ohms), just to hear that! Glad you didn’t take it personal, I just wanted to get some clarity as to your opinions… Like I said before, we all have different thoughts when it comes to amp-sub combos… Most of it depends on how much money you want to lay out, and if you want to go out of the cab for the Lightning, hell for any truck… I think I would rather see a sealed box than the Thunder Form, but that’s just me… I can tell you that at 25 (out of 35, for others) on our HU, and with the Eclipse/MTX setup I have now, you aren’t going to hear wind, the super charger or the MAC pipes at WOT (not good for detonation), your also not hearing the passenger next to you screaming at the top of his/her lungs with out hitting the att on the HU… She flat slams for a small cab and has no distortion, I love it… But I am in no way saying that it would keep up with your 12” comp setup, ported, and 1100w @ 1 ohm, that’s defiantly a different class… Thanks again…

jl audio is the best i think. I got 4 ten inch w'6 with 2400 watts going to them. they bang pretty hard.
really u can get any sub to sound good as long as u mix and match the ohms on the speakers and get your amp wired in series with your speakers to drop the ohms down on the amp. lower ohms on amp more power and how u wire your speakers.
i got my speakers in 4 ohm. speakers are wired in series with the amp and each other and got my ohms on each speaker to .05 ohms. plus mad power on the amp.

Never trust a sub (in the long run) whos RMS rating is less than half of the max. 250 rms/1000 max is to much of a gap. It might take 1000 watts but not for long. It's been proven in Car Auido & electronics that over rated subs are rated like that. If money allows, choose one that has the rms at least half of the max rating. EX. 250/500, 300/600.
