My Infinity Subs… Argggggg
What amp?
My Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1 subs (both of them) blew last week @ 6 months old. I also have a buddy that mounted 3 10.1’s on the same amp and smoked one… Here are the amp specs…
MTX Thunder81000D Mono Block - Class D Amp
Test Voltage 12.5 VDC @ 4 ohm
Rated - 500 Watts RMS/Channel
Actual = 783 Watts RMS/Channel = 1566 Watts RMS/Channel @ 2 ohms
I think Infinity rated the 10.1’s at 350w(rms) – 1400w(max), BS they cant handle the power!
I ran the 10.1’s at 4ohms, approximately 350w(rms) each at full load with the amp tuned down and never at full volume, poof…
I just changed out to an Eclipse 88100dvc 8ohm (4+4) and paralleled them to 4ohms, these suckers hit much harder at ¾ power on the HU with the amp at the same setting and handle 500w(rms) continuous…
I do like Infinity, with 6.1 components up front and 5X7 rears it’s a very clear clean sound, but IMO the subs I wouldn’t do again… Here is the second amp for the components…
MTX Thunder6304 4 Channel – Amp
Test Voltage 12.5 VDC @ 4 ohm
Rated - 37.5 Watts RMS/Channel
Actual = 69 Watts RMS/Channel = 276 RMB @ 12.5VDC
Normal voltage to the amps 13.6vdc – 14.4vdc… Depending on how hard I’m rocken…
Other options to consider:
MB Quarts –

JL (with dvc) -

Your subs will also perform better in a box, but a lot of members like the Thunder Form, it fits great, looks good and is lighter than a box. Good luck with the build…

If you can find a dealer that is closing out last years JL Audio 10w6, then that would be the way to go. It will kick the crap out of either one of those subs you're looking at. If you can't find a dealer locally, then try ebay, as they have some pretty reputable sellers that are closing them out at pretty good prices. Another sub that will outperform the ones you are looking at is the Alpine Type R. Great for small enclosures and kicks out some great bass. You can find these on ebay for about $180.00 a pair. Good luck in whatever you decide.

I agree.
JL makes a good sub. I don't like the Infinity's just like you said they CAN'T handle power. JBL is okay, I don't like the sound out of them though. The best type of sub to get is one that is VERY efficient in converting power to sound. I hate to say this but Pioneer is an effiecent speaker. Another good one is MEMPHIS.(who's that you ask) www.memcaraudio.com I can honestly say that I have had every sub that is mentioned, Pioneer, which I really liked. Infinity, which I hated. JL which was made okay but It was not loud enough. JBL's which I have installed in a friends vehicle and then sold for him so he could get some memphis subs. Check them out. The power reference subs are very effiecnt and sound awsome. Check out my sig for the LVS (loud volume subwoofer).
P.S you can pick up a Power reference sub for really close or less than a JBL or infinity or JL. And you won't have to second guess yourself!

sdf150guy,
That's cool. I went to there web site and found a dealer in
San diego. Check out Imperial Electronics, 2674 imperial Ave, 619-231-4131 and ask them about the memphis Studio and the Power Reference Subs(you won't be dissapointed!)The studio Don't have the Earth shattering bass but it does have VERY clean hard hitting bass. The Power Reference subs are their Entry Level that blows away The comp VR's. Like I sadi I have Had my fair share of subs and amps. A friend of mine owns a car audio place. You Get experience with EVERYTHING!LOL Check it out and Get back to me
