Why couldn't I add the sensor right in the straight portion in front of the throttle body?

That is what your piping will look like, so I'm sure you could put it there. But if you have a longer section of tubing I would put it there as the bends in the pipe disturb the air flow. My tuner likes 6" of straight pipe on each side of the tube.

That was my guess too, try to get the longest straight piece of pipe.
I wasn't sure which it would be since I haven't mocked it all up yet.

I just got an answer back from my tuner and he actually said he prefers the draw through, that surprised me, guess it must be easier to tune according to him. He hasn't answered me yet as to which one I would prefer as the driver.
