Front end noise, mechanics?

I hope I don't get in trouble here but I would appreicate your help. This actually has to do with our 2001 Windstar minivan front wheel drive. We "think" that it has developed what sounds like road noise coming from the front end. A whine that relates to how fast/slow we're going. Almost like how tires can make road noise but I don't think it's them.
This is something that has been going on for months but so subtle that we were'nt even sure we were hearing anything (and still aren't) but it just seems louder than we remember. Bad wheel bearing(s) would have had catastophic failure by now, right?? Something to do with the tranny??
Everything seems to be working correctly and feels right. Just seems louder than it should be.

Any suggestions??
Thanks

wheel bearings to me.they are made as a sealed hub.three bolts and hub assembly comes out.you can look from under vehicle-maybe see rust buildup on side that is noisey.
