New member - old question please advise!!

Hello all, i recently joined this site! I have a 2006 F150 FX4 with a 6" rough country suspension lift and 35" bfg mud terrains. I see a bunch of u guys with 6" lift are changing to bilstein 5100 shocks and cranking them? to fit 37's im not really sure how this works can someone explain this a little? do u still have to use the 6" spacer on top or is this just a longer shock? any pros or cons to doing this?

I take it your lift uses your OEM coilover shocks and a 6 inch spacer like the Pro Comp Stage 1? If it does, you can replace the OEM coilover with the Bilstien OEM replacement coilovers. They feature adjustable spring preload to lift the truck up to 2 inches. So, if you install them with your lift and RC 6 inch spacer, you will get 2 more inches of lift just like a stock truck. Of course, a better and more expensive alternative to this would be a set of longer heavy duty coilover shocks that also feature adjustable preload (like are optional with the Pro Comp and Fabtech lifts).

Wandell is correct. If you buy the oem length 5100 struts with 2" adjustability then you will have to set them at the +2" setting and still use your 6" spacer on top. That is how most people do it and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

The better route to go though is to buy the 5100's for a 4"-6" lift. They sit at 4" under normal preload but have a 5" setting and a 6" setting. You can put them on the 5" setting and get a 3" spacer to sit on top or on the 6" setting and put a 2" spacer on top. It's more expensive but more visually appealing and some say more physically sound.

Wandell is correct but let me clarify something, when he says OEM coilover he means the OEM strut. When you order bilsteins they will send the shocks (struts) to you and you put them inside the coilover.

Mhockey is asking if the bilsteins that work on the oem COIL will work on the skyjacker COIL.

Were getting coil and strut mixed up here.

Correct! Wrong terminology is the cause of the confusion!

Yes they will work with the oem coils and I don't see why they wouldn't work with the Skyjacker coils. It's my understanding that all coils for the 04-08 F150's are the same diameter and that you you can mix and match brands as you please.
