1000 dollars to fix ball joints?

+1000 for Moog. Do mess around with anything else. I did my 2001 over 4 years ago with all Moog stuff, and compared with other brands they where built much better. I did all 4 ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, pitman arm and idler arm (which to my surprise had zerk joints from the factory).
Only thing is you must keep them greased! Sure the factory sealed for life are maintenance free, at least until they need to be replaced. If you keep the Moogs greased at every oil change they will outlast your truck.
BTW, I too had never done any serious suspension work, but it was not bad at all. There are some good how to's out there.

i buy them from advance auto and just take them back to the store with a receipt and they swap them out. as far as i kno where ever you buy them they will swap them for you (i kno rock auto is cheapest but i found the extra 20 bucks is worth being able to change them out localy)

That doesn't sound right. The control arms come with the ball joints, so you shouldn't need to order the extra set. I just threw a right and left upper control arm, and two lower bj's into the cart and came up with a total of $159.16
Forgot shipping. The quote to my address was an extra $19.
