Ford Power!

Here is my truck (as filthy as it is) with my toybox attached.

The trailer weighs 8020lbs. and has a tongue weight of 875 lbs.
With the 5.4 and Auto. Trans. it pulls it just fine. So for those people out there that say Ford lacks towing power, the proof is in the pudding...

Nice rig. I'd get a tranny temp gauge and stay out of the mountains. You are very near the max towing weight. Most *seasoned* RV'rs would say you are over safe towing weight.

xbwfo,

Thanks I have the 3.55 gears and Im carrying two quads in the box.

IAm,

Thanks for the advice. I know I am Very near the max of 8300lbs. on my truck when fully loaded (8020lbs.), but I make a point of towing with no water or gas in the trailer which brings the weight down to 7480 lbs. ~ Still not a light load I know, but I do use weight distributors and twin cam sway controls along with a Prodigy brake control.

I know this wont be a long term way to go, but until I find a great deal on a crew cab F250 with the diesel, it works pretty well

As far as tranny temp., I put on the biggest trans. cooler I could find. Other than that, the truck is under warranty and Ford says Im within capacity so....

Glad you are satisfied with the way your rig tows. These Fords are pretty tough and have lots of low end.

Question for you however. Do you know how much your truck weighs empty? How about when loaded up and you have the tongue weight applied?

The only reason I ask is you are going by Fords listed max tow weight of #8300, but your GCWR is, at most #13000. Subtracting #8300 from that only leaves you with an allowable truck weight of #4700. And that would have to include the tongue weight as well!

Even using your trailer weight of #7480, that still means your truck all loaded up and full of people, gas and tongue weight can only be #5520. Your GVWR is probably between #6250 and #6500.

When I tow my rig, my truck weighs #6230, but my TT is only #3880 on it's axles (the tongue weight is on the truck). I've got 4x4, but I don't think it weighs #1000 more then a 4x2..... Maybe it does, who knows...... Good luck and I hope you find that F250 PSD in the future!

Mitch,

my truck alone -with me in it (190lbs.) weighs 4660

I see your point

On the bright side, my wife says that if I find the right deal, I can get the 250 PSD .... but I dont see many deals on the PSDs.

I'm pretty sure my truck weighs close to #5300 with just me and a full tank of gas (hell, I'm #200 all by myself! )

I've found that the weight really adds up quick! I don't even have that much stuff in the bed either. Oh well, that's why I got a Ford in the first place. I knew it would be able to handle it's max load better then some running empty! I'm even ready to roll over 100k too! Take it easy and have fun. That's what it's all about anyway.
