Lightbulb How much hitch drop?

? for the folks out there with a 03 Screw FX4 and factory hitch.

How much of a drop do you need for most of your normal trailering? I am considering a Reese 5.25" drop hitch to pull a snowmobile trailer and also a older boat trailer. I know there is a way to measure but since I tow different trailers, I want a happy medium. There is also a 6" or 3" drop, all will tow upto 5000lbs.

Thanks in advanced

Reese makes an adjustable hitch, once you had the proper drop for what ever you were pulling it would be a simple matter to adjust it, especially if it is a seasonal thing, snowmobil, boat.

I love my adjustable hitch and covert-a-ball. Hitch height depends on the trailer. Sometimes I drop about 5" and sometimes I need it straight.

I just ordered a Putnam adjustable draw bar with their convertable S/S ball system for my 2003 4X4. I'm good to go for either the front or rear receiver now. The drop drawbar I used with my 2001 2WD was not low enough for my trailer with this truck.

I have a 2000 F150 XLT ORP. Anything less than a 6 inch drop caused me a lot problems when I tried to unhook the trailer.

Most of the time I had to pull the pin out of the receiver and pull up so the hitch would pull out of the receiver, and then fall on the ground - this method doesn't work very well when you are trying to unhook the trailer on the side of a hill (paralled to the hill, NOT perpendicular)

Buckshot, I'm courious about what you decided? I'm trying to make the same decision, I have a 2002 Supercrew FX4 Lariat & was thinking about a 6" drop.
