Question Tow question

A quick question..I have a 1999 Ford F-150 6" fabtech lift with 35 tires..I am going to get the ring and pinion changed to 4.56. I am going to tqake a small vacation to Colorado from Calif towing a 3000 lb trailer. Should I wait until the gear swap or should I be ok towing this much on the stock gear.

Those are pretty big tires for stock gears. While I'm sure you'll eventually make it to Colorado, I woudn't want to be stuck behind you in the mountains.

I dont know what motor you have or what the gear ratio is after those tires, but I have the 4.6l with damn 3:08's & I pull my 600lb ATV & 3200lb TT (wet) & I tow several times every summer up and down the moutains of the west.. Although it's not overpowering I seem to do okay, allot better then I would think.. Generally on the hwy I can maintain 65mph & the steeper hills (known as the sisters out in Wyoming) by time I hit the top i'm doing around 45-50mph, but other then that I would say I'm fairly satisfied with it's towing ability, however if the winds gets to strong, all bets are off

Hey banjo,
Would you be interested in selling your 3.73 ring & pinion?

You hear all the opinions..I have tow some things over the years...But with what you driving and hauling I think you will be ok to go...Check over your brakes to be sure and add air to your tires...Just going to eat some gas...Have a safe trip...

I had 3.55 and 5.4L with 315/75/16 (which are just a hair smaller than 35's) and my truck felt sluggish. I went to the 4.56 and love it. You can do it with your stock gears but your gas mileage will be worse and probably harder on you engine and tranny. basically your truck has to work harder to pull the load and turn those bigger tires. Its up to you but I think you would be happier with the 4.56 gear swap.
