Before I purchaced my 5th wheel last summer I called rv dealers ford dealers not just one, internet research you name it I did it.. My purchase was a 05 duthman sport 25' 4900lb dry and usually weigh about 6500 full of water food ext.. truck is a 04 f150 fx4 tow package 3:55's 5.4 happy with it and I to see 12-14 mpg depending on terrain. pulls the grades at around 2800 rpm's at 55.

I tow a 7300lb (loaded) fifth wheel with my 04 supercab and have no complaints, get 9mpg. My uncle has the same trailer and a 2002 2500 gmc with the 6.0L. We've taken turns trying each others rigs, mine accelerates just as good, gets similar mileage and stops better.

I'm new here, but wanted to share an experience had towing a trailer.
I had a '02 Ranger Flareside with 3.0 V-6 automatic OD transmission.
I installed overload shocks, and a weight distributing hitch.
I have a 18' car trailer with electric brakes that weighs about 1500 lbs., and the car I carry on it weighs about 3000 lbs. I used the Ranger to haul cars from Texas to Illinois several times, thru some pretty hill country. The Ranger was working hard, but got the job done.
Gas mileage was lower, towed with OD off, but that little truck did a great job!
I now have an '05 F-150, and it pulls my car & trailer easily.
I realize that I'm not towing a tremendous amount of weight, but if a Ranger can tow a trailer, I know an F-150 will.

I found the Rangers biggest problem towing was frontal area.
If you'll look at Ford's towing guide, it gives a frontal area limit that's a little ridiculous.
