the weal link is the 331 diff....not the v6 or the 5sp...

 

That doesn’t explain why two vehicles with the same axle have different rated towing capacities with only the transmissions being different.

 

The limiting factor on the manual is that the general public does not know how to tow with a manual transmission..... The 5 speeds in the F150's are marginal at best, strength wise, and Ford probably does not want to warranty them for the "newbies" trying to tow anything more then a U-Haul trailer with them.... (not saying you are in this class.... Just talking about the general public here! )

I think they are the same 5 speeds they put in the Mazda and Ranger pickups???

The physical truck is the same, as far as axles, frame, brakes go. I'd say that if you are good with the clutch you could make it work...

I have a V-6 with a 5 speed manual and I tow my camper about once a month and my camper dry weighs 4500lb. I have towed the camper on a 4 hour trip and it did well even climbing on bridges but it was mostly flat land. But I know when to gear down. Backing I found is the hardest. You must be careful not to burn that clutch but I have been pulling for two years and so far so good.

 

On that F350... is that a 7.5 or 7.4?

UUUMMMMM 460!!! Don't see many of those around anymore.

 

My son is driving it now. The gas prices are killing him. My savings in gas mileage between the ’94-F350 & my new ’05-F150 almost make my truck payment. True the V6 isn’t near as much fun to drive as a 4X4-460 but I keep telling my self that I’m saving money. With two kids in college that has become my priority.
