I did a quick search on Google and it looks like your Expy can tow up to 8,950 lbs. Ford's max tow ratings are often unrealistic - i.e. you can only reach the max if don't have have people, fuel and cargo in the tow vehicle and your trailer has too low of a tongue weight. But it looks like your Expedition has the best configuration for towing and a little extra capacity, so with the right trailer and travelling light in the Expy, you are probably OK.
An open car trailer suitable for hauling a Lightning is going to weigh at least 2,000 lbs, probably more like 2,500 lbs. A trailer with two 3,500 lb. axles and a 2,500 lb. trailer weight is only going to be able to carry a max 4,500 lb. load (if perfectly distributed), which is about what the Lightning weighs.
