I towed a 18' Wells Cargo utility trailer coast to coast a couple of times with a 1989 E250 Van with the 351 in it. This was in 1989 and 1990, so the van was brand spanking new too.... We loaded that trailer up with a bunch of tools and equipment and it had to weigh at least #6000... That's what the GVWR of the trailer was at any rate and we had a lot of crap in that thing!! Without the WD bars, it really sagged the rear end!
Well, it towed ok on the flats.... Hit any kind of grade and it was in the left lane with the semi's..... At times I was pedal to the floor in first gear and going 25 mph!! No tach in the thing, so no idea what the rpms were, but it was revving! Could actually watch the gas gauge move too! I would usually only get about 300 miles out of the TWO gas tanks on it.
It always made it to it's destination and never left me stranded, but it was not what I would call an enjoyable tow either.....
Good luck!
