Gas Mileage while towing?
#2
A very subjective question.
It depends on trailer design for aerodynamics as well as tires, tire pressure, trailer weight, tongue weight, trailer load and much, much more.
With a small enclosed utility trailer with a light load you may actually get better milage towing than not towing.
But to answer your question from experience.
'03 extended cab 6.5' bed, 5.4, 3.55, 4x4 without a camper shell.
small light utility trailer open style 18mpg
small light utility trailer enclosed 19mpg
in-line 2 horse empty 17mpg
in-line 2 horse loaded 11mpg
slant 2 horse front tack empty 13mpg
slant 2 horse front tack loaded 9mpg
7K twin axle car hauler empty 13mpg
7k twin axle car hauler loaded with car weight 2500lbs 7mpg
10k twin axle car hauler empty 12mpg
10k twin axle car hauler loaded with 5000# car 6-7mpg
These are all relative as inclines will suck fuel like no tomorrow in a heavy load.
I hope this helps......

I get 8-9mpg towing. It seems to do better with the ARE cover on there. I guess it's helping the wind resitance some. On a trip to pensacola last year (800 mile round trip) I averaged 7-8mpg per tank. That was loaded pretty heavy and no cover (had the generators running in the bed).

Here's the other end of the spectrum. I pull a 2,000 pound tent trailer with my 4.2L, 5 speed, 4x4 and consistently get 17 to 18 mpg at 70 mph; using 5th gear. So it all depends doesn't it? The only thing that knocks it down is a severe side or head wind. The worst I ever got was 15 into a 30 mph headwind; had to use 4th gear that day.

What speeds are you guys towing at. I have not seen any gas mileage over 17 miles to the gallon. That is without towing. Towing I Was getting 14 to 15 towing a jet ski which weighs about 3,000 lbs. Just tryign to get ideas. I have a 00 F-150 extended cab 5.4 liter V-8 with 4X4, 6.5 foot bed with cover 3.55 gears too.
