2006 F-150 spr.crew towing advice

I have a 2006 F-150 super crew, 139'' Wheel base. 5.4 automatic, with 3.55 limited slip and 7050# GVWR Package.
Oh and 18" tires.

Me and my wife want to buy a travel trailer, I cannot find on any sticker on my truck what my truck weighs. The manual says that the max weight including truck,cargo and loaded trailer cannot exceed 13,500 lbs... does that sound right and what do you all think about what size trailer and weight trailer should I be looking for. and what other kind of equipment would I need to install on my truck?

13500 minus 7050 is 6450. That's a good number to use to determine the max weight you should tow.

Does your truck have the factory towing package with a hitch receiver?

8200lbs - 500lbs (18" wheels) = 7700lbs

I assume that you meant "18 inch WHEELS" (18 inch tires would be pretty interesting though...)

check this info out:

here is a guide from Ford on towing, go to page 9, you'll see your truck listed, if it has the tow package, it is rated for 8200lbs, minus 500lbs for the 18" wheels, so a total of 7700lbs.

when you say minus 7050, where did you get that number? and yes it has the factory hitch.

7050 is the GVWR of your truck, that max weight your truck and it's passengers/cargo can weigh.

Most people are happy keeping their 1/2 ton limit around 6000 pounds.

I just towed my 8.5x16 enclosed car hauler from Charlotte, NC to Aspen, CO. Fully loaded it weighs 6000 lbs with a combined weight of 11,000 lbs with the truck. That is about the most I would want to haul. Watching the temp guage climbing over the continental dived at 11,000 ft put the tranny temps at 210 to 220. If the needle had moved any more I would have pulled over to let it cool off. I can't imagine the truck surviving that kind of climb at the maximum 13000 lbs combined vehicle weight. I think if you go with a trailer over 6000 lbs you are going to be disappointed if you get into any hills or mountains.

I would agree with cross. The thing you have to remember is weigh the truck loaded, ready for a trip, passengers, fuel, etc. 7,050# - that weight gives you what is left for tongue weight... probably 600# or less. Minimum tongue weight on a bumper pull trailer is 10% (12 to 15% rides better), therefore, maximum trailer is 6000#, if loaded correctly. The key for loading is to put as much into the trailer (out of the truck) as possible - luggage, etc. Try to have the truck only carrying passengers, fuel and that tongue weight.

But, 6000# is a realistic tow capacity. Can you tow more? Depends where you are, how you load, terrain, etc... then the answer is maybe.

The 18" wheels are not an issue, unless the tires have an overall height of more then 33" and are only "P" rated tires....

Your #7050 GVWR is the minimum for the 'new' F150s... I have a #6250 GVWR F150 and I'm maxed on that pretty much before I hitch up my TT!

I do exceed my trucks GVWR when I hitch up my #5000 TT, but I know my truck and with 176,000 miles on it and it's my daily driver, I'm not 'killing' it either.....

My trucks GCWR is #12,500, so I would not worry about getting a #6000 GVWR TT if I had a GCWR of #13,500.. It'll tow it just fine.... I would stay away from a TT that has a GVWR of #7000 or more in your case... Sure, it'll tow it... Hell, MY F150 would "tow" it.... It's the comfort of towing that thing for hours and hours that makes the difference.... I can tow my rig anywhere and for hours on end and be comfortable with it... I can tow a #7000 TT around the block and be fine, but I would not want to do it for more then 50 miles....

Stick to a TT that's around #6500 GVWR and you will be okay.... JMHO...
