Towing anything with a 15 year old truck requires a thorough inspection. That said, I'd keep it to under 4000 pounds unlaoded weight rating which should be hopfully under 5000 pounds loaded to leave home.

As long as the truck is in sound shape, the thing should easily pull 5k. We had a 92 s-cab flareside 2wd and towed a 21 ft Baja boat, which I'd guess with trailer might be around 5500 lbs? It had a 454 and 66 gallons of fuel too, thing towed it easily. Upgrading cooling and tranny cooler is a good idea.

Thank you for the tip. I will say it pulls a ton of pellets like nothing.

There is a lot more wind resistance with an RV vs. a boat.

Suspension, springs, busching, ball joints, would begood areas to investigate. I'm to worried about pulling power. I'm sure that truck can move 20k pounds.

I meant not worried about pulling power.

Anyway, most 1/2 ton trucks are happy pulling 5-6k pounds. Any more, any most people's comfort/safety level is lowered.

Make sure to use a WD hitch and proportional brake controller like the Prodigy.

What rear is on the truck? If a 3.08, I would not tow more than about 3-4k totals as it will overwork the transmission.

Check the tag on the door, it will have a code for your axle, and the list of codes have been posted many time, or check the tag on the diff itself.

I wouldn't worry too much if you have 3.08's, just lock it out of overdrive when you tow.

Tow capacity on a vehicle with 3.08 is at least 1500lbs lower than one with a 3.55.
